October 2018 To Parents, members and friends.

The Scout Association has a new brand which will appearing on group events soon which reflects what we have always done – giving young people Skills for Life.

The summer BBQ and AGM, went very well an enjoyable time was had by all. We purchased a new Canadian canoe first used at the scout summer camp but it will be good for beavers and cubs next year.  Also purchased, with the help from a grant from Tesco were new chairs and tables for the scout hut (the old canoe and chairs have been sold on ebay). The Christmas meal for leaders and exec members and partners will be on Sat 8th Dec. This is followed by our uniformed organisations Christingle service for families in the Church on Thurs Dec 12th, the money raised goes to The Children’s Society and is a lovely way to start the Christmas period. Burn’s night meal and Ceilidh for everyone is on Sat Jan 19th, details to follow. The group scarf is the Royal Stuart Tartan from our sponsoring authority the Church of King Charles the Martyr so that is why we try to have a Burn’s night celebration. The group is 80 years old in 2019 – group BBQ / hog roast to celebrate at the end of the summer half term holiday.

Beavers  James Purton has taken over as Beaver leader, welcome to Rachael (now 18) who joins Fiona as assistant leader to be joined by Halimah when she becomes 18.

Last term they did Beaver biscuits, indoor games, leaf printing, sports outside, a log chew about different countries they had been to.  One mum made Danish meatballs!!!  They made Father’s day cards, balloons filled with water, Jeff came and gave a talk and a demonstration with his police equipment (safety talk) and had a visit to the Hari Krishna temple and an investiture.

They have made balloon animals (with help).  They all enjoyed that and all went home with a balloon sword and a dog!!  This term Beaver are making biscuits, A-Z forest game; a Young leaders quiz for them,  a  bonfire and melting marshmallows.  We will be making rocky road cakes to sell at KCM fair or willow decorations and a   craft evening decorations for Christmas tree and then cards.

Cubs At summer camp we did a number activities including potholing, zip wire and backwards cooking we also practiced tracking skills and bush craft which were very popular. This autumn they are on an “undersea camp” which includes a visit to the Sea Life Centre Birmingham.

Paul has stepped down as Akela, but he continues to be involved in scouting and will be on the Undersea camp this autumn. Michele, Jay and Nicole aided by two teenage you leaders can just about manage the day to day running of the pack but we need a manager to oversee the pack i.e. a new Akela! , plus some more regular adult help as assistant leaders so not everyone is needed every week. With a small team of leaders we cannot guarantee cubs will run every week. Scouting gives people skills for life and different to school. Please think about whether you can contribute to young people learning new skills, if not you, please ask relatives and friends. Anyone interested should speak to Michelle or contact Chris.

Scouts. In the summer term the scouts concentrated on outdoor activities such as cycling, canoeing, and patrol hikes, and some of the scouts found time to pass their digital citizen badge. Summer camp was on a farm on the banks of the river Wye near Hay on Wye activities included a farm tour to learn about cattle rearing, canoeing, hikes, gorge scrambling. Congratulations to the scout team who came first in the district cyclocross competition. This autumn we have an overnight hike planned and will be entering the County Green Beret competition again (we came 4th last year). Welcome to Danyel Ceccaldi a new volunteer assistant leader for the troop.

Explorers had their summer camp in Cornwall where amongst many things they went surfing, and visited the Eden project.
